It happened, the MLB All-Star Game no longer matters! Well at least not when it comes to home field advantage for the World Series.. Ya know what I have to say about that? It's about time!! I love the MLB All-Star Game and I love that it is competitive, unlike the NBA or the NFL.. Those All-Star Games are pointless and I just don't like them. The fact that the MLB has a representative from each team, the fans get a vote, and the game shows player personalities are all things that make it so enjoyable for fans. The MLB hypes and markets it well, fans show up for All-Star Weekend every year, and the players really value the All-Star Experience as players, with their children, and with their friends throughout the MLB. The MLB All-Star Game is a highlight for players and fans, I know it's one of my favorite sporting events of the year! With that being said, I really did NOT like that the winner of the All-Star Game was awarded home field advantage for the World Series. Nope, not at all. I say that it is about time the All-Star Game doesn't determine home field advantage because it just doesn't make sense. Not to mention, it isn't fair. I'm a very competitive person, I can tell you that most athletes are. I can't even begin to explain how mad I would be if I was part of a team that had the best record in baseball, earning them home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and then had home field advantage taken away for the World Series because my League lost the All-Star Game. Home field advantage is a huge bonus in the playoffs and to have home field, for the biggest series of the entire year, determined by a game that takes place mid-season, with teams made up of players from every team, yeah it just isn't ideal. Give home field to the team that deserves it. That is just the way it should be. Having your home crowd, a ballpark, batting cages, locker rooms, or even a town that you're familiar with opposed to a new venue and new town can really help a team and give them an edge. Look at the 2011 World Series. I mean does anyone think the Cardinals would have pulled that win off without home field advantage?! I have my doubts! I'd love to say "oh no it wouldn't of mattered", but come on I don't actually believe that. On the opposing side of this, I have my doubts that the Cubs would have won the World Series this past year if they did have home field advantage. I have no doubt that they were an incredibly talented team, but the history held at Wrigley Field and the pressure that was on them to win this year was evident. Getting out of there and heading back to Cleveland was probably the best thing that happened to the Cubs this year. I hope the MLB All-Star Game keeps the fan's interest and continues to be a highlight of my year, but I am glad it no longer determines World Series home field advantage.
